Description

L-Carnitine plays an essential role in mitochondrial energy metabolism by transporting long-chain fatty acids across the inner mitochondrial membrane where they are oxidized for ATP production. Without sufficient carnitine, fat cannot efficiently enter the mitochondria and remains unused as an energy source. Supplementation has been studied for improving exercise performance and recovery, reducing muscle damage, supporting fat loss during caloric restriction, and enhancing fertility parameters in men. Older adults may particularly benefit, as carnitine biosynthesis declines with age and brain carnitine deficiency is associated with cognitive decline.
