Beta-alanine is a non-essential amino acid that combines with histidine in muscle tissue to form carnosine, the primary intramuscular buffer against the acid accumulation that causes fatigue during high-intensity exercise. Supplementation increases carnosine concentrations by 40-80%, extending the time before muscles fatigue during efforts lasting 1-4 minutes.
