Description
Iodine is an irreplaceable component of thyroid hormones T3 and T4, which govern metabolic rate, body temperature, growth, and development at every stage of life. Deficiency remains the leading preventable cause of intellectual disability worldwide and is more common than many assume, particularly in populations avoiding iodized salt or seafood. Beyond thyroid function, iodine is concentrated in breast, ovarian, and prostate tissue, where it may play protective roles.
