Berberine
Description
Berberine is an alkaloid extracted from several plants, most notably Berberis species, with a long history of use in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Its primary mechanism of action is activation of AMPK, the cellular energy sensor sometimes called a metabolic master switch, which improves insulin sensitivity and reduces glucose production in the liver. Clinical studies have found berberine comparable to metformin in lowering blood glucose and HbA1c. It also favorably modifies the gut microbiome, lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and demonstrates anti-inflammatory activity.
