Description

Berberine is an alkaloid extracted from several plants, most notably Berberis species, with a long history of use in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. Its primary mechanism of action is activation of AMPK, the cellular energy sensor sometimes called a metabolic master switch, which improves insulin sensitivity and reduces glucose production in the liver. Clinical studies have found berberine comparable to metformin in lowering blood glucose and HbA1c.
