Description
Astaxanthin, derived from microalgae (and the pigment that makes salmon and flamingos pink), is one of the few antioxidants capable of spanning a cell membrane end-to-end, neutralizing free radicals on both the inside and outside of the lipid bilayer simultaneously. It is also one of the rare carotenoids that crosses both the blood-brain barrier and blood-retinal barrier, driving research interest in eye strain, macular health, and exercise-induced oxidative stress. Biohackers often pair it with omega-3s since both are fat-soluble and target overlapping inflammatory and cardiovascular pathways.
