Description
Apigenin, the primary active flavonoid in chamomile, binds benzodiazepine sites on GABA-A receptors, producing a mild anxiolytic and sleep-supportive effect without the dependency profile of pharmaceutical benzodiazepines — explaining chamomile tea's longstanding reputation as a calming bedtime ritual, just at a more concentrated, standardized dose. Separately, it has emerged in cell-senescence research as having mild senolytic properties, drawing interest from the same longevity community exploring fisetin and quercetin, though this application has far less human data than its sleep-related use. Some men's health forums have raised theoretical concerns about aromatase inhibition at very high doses affecting hormone balance; standard sleep-support doses are well below where this becomes a practical concern.

How it Feels

Animal / preclinical only
No human senolytic trials exist for apigenin. Current mechanistic evidence suggests apigenin may be senomorphic (suppressing inflammatory signaling from senescent cells) rather than truly senolytic (killing senescent cells) -- the popular 'senolytic' marketing claim is not supported by the current evidence.
