Description
A tiled room held around 40 to 50 C at close to 100 percent humidity, so the air is visibly saturated. Because sweat cannot evaporate, your body loses its main route for shedding heat and core temperature climbs at a far lower air temperature than a dry sauna needs. Sessions are short, usually ten to fifteen minutes.

There is no randomised evidence for steam room bathing as a health practice. The modality is absent from the passive heating trial literature entirely. What is known is physiological rather than clinical: moist heat at near total humidity prevents evaporative cooling, so core temperature rises at a lower air temperature than in a dry sauna. Whether that produces any health outcome has not been tested.

No systematic review or meta-analysis of steam room or hammam use was identified. Steam bathing is absent from the passive heating trial literature, which pooled sauna, hot water immersion, hot yoga and local heating but not steam rooms. Claims about airway clearance derive from steam inhalation research in respiratory infection, which is a different intervention delivered a different way.

No trial safety data exist for this modality. Documented practical hazards are hyperthermia, which develops faster than in dry heat because evaporative cooling is unavailable, dehydration, orthostatic hypotension on standing, and scalding from steam vents. Poorly maintained steam rooms are a recognised environment for bacterial and fungal growth.
Exposure Limit
Core temperature rises faster here than in a dry sauna at any given air temperature, because sweat cannot evaporate. Session lengths appropriate to a dry sauna are therefore not transferable. Dizziness, nausea or disorientation indicate hyperthermia and end the session.

Mechanisms
At close to 100 percent humidity, sweat cannot evaporate, so the body loses its main route for shedding heat. Core temperature therefore rises at a much lower air temperature than in a dry sauna, which is why 45 C steam feels more punishing than 90 C dry heat. Warm moist air also humidifies the upper airway, which is the basis of the sinus and congestion claims, though that effect is transient and local.
